What to Expect from Your Wellness Exam

Vitals Check & Preventative Screenings

When you visit waller health center, in waller city, we’ll gather your information and conduct a wellness exam. First, one of our nurses will check your weight, height, and blood pressure, draw blood, and ask you to provide a urine sample for analysis.

You’ll then have an EKG screening as a preventative measure to assess your heart rhythm and give us some information about your heart health. Next, our certified X-ray technician will take a low-radiation chest X-ray to thoroughly examine your heart.

Healthcare Treatment Plan

Armed with information from your medical history form, chest X-ray, EKG, urinalysis, early blood-work results*, review of systems, and physical exam, your doctor will talk with you about any recommended lifestyle changes, prescriptions, or additional screenings.

*NOTE: Some of your bloodwork results may come from the lab later. You will be notified when the results are complete.

Review of Systems (ROS)

After the preventative screenings, your physician will conduct a “review of systems” by asking questions to identify signs or symptoms you may be having. If you’re experiencing chest pain, breathing difficulty, stomach pain, or blood in your urine or stool, you should mention these to your doctor.

Your physician will check to ensure you’re up-to-date on vaccinations and have completed recommended screenings for cancer (breast and colon for women; prostate and colon for men). Finally, you’ll have a complete physical exam to check your heart rhythm, lymph nodes, and carotid arteries.

Additional Screenings

If necessary, your doctor may order additional screenings as part of your wellness exam, including:

  • Treadmill test: This evaluation is used to further check your heart, as well as detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and determine the presence — or absence — of coronary artery disease
  • DEXA scan: This bone-density screening measures your risk for osteoporosis and helps protect your overall bone health

As an advanced measure in wellness, waller health center also offers the following screenings that have been proven highly useful in preventing serious illness:

  • Carotid ultrasound: This imaging test helps detect blockages in the carotid arteries and is used in stroke prevention
  • Abdominal aortic ultrasound: This type of ultrasound checks for abdominal aortic aneurysms, which often go undetected and can rupture without warning

These screenings are typically scheduled a month in advance and are read by highly trained, trusted radiologists. Your own physician will provide you with these test results at your following appointment along with any recommended follow-up.

Because these ultrasound tests may not be covered through your insurance, waller health center, makes them available at a reasonable price.

What Happens After Your Exam?

Once your annual wellness exam is complete, your doctor will meet with you one-on-one to discuss next steps.

Your wellness exam may indicate that you’ll need to make some lifestyle changes on your journey to better health, which could include:

  • Moving closer to your ideal weight, as obesity is often accompanied by serious health concerns
  • Eating a diet rich in fiber and certain nutrients to improve health and prevent illness
  • Reducing consumption of sugar to help prevent diabetes
  • Reducing sodium intake to help control blood pressure
  • Reducing cholesterol intake for a healthier circulatory system and heart
  • Increasing calcium intake for stronger bones
  • Eliminating smoking to help protect you from strokes, heart attacks, lung cancer, and diabetes
  • Reducing alcohol intake for better overall health and disease prevention
  • Taking certain prescriptions to help prevent serious illness

By understanding your risk factors, having a concrete plan to get you to better health, and scheduling your checkups annually, you can take control of your wellness and feel more confident in your overall well-being.
